Glitter, metallic, and sequins shine at day

A major runway trend is glitter and sequins, and this glam is not just for night. Wear a full on sequin skirt with everyday wear for a cool fashion forward look. Or just go with a stripe of sequins along the legs of your trousers or a sequin embellished collar. The latter two also work for the office when you keep everything else classic and skip the necklace. In other words, avoid over bling. The trend asks for styling that doesn’t look like date night or evening wear. The trend also includes silver and golden-hued clothes. Recall that everything that is shiny makes you look bigger than you are in that area. Thus, pick where you wear your glitter strategically. Office wear

Power suits are back. We loved them in the 80s. However, this time suits are not solid navy, black, or brown. They are daring red or plaid, they are colorful. Plaid is the It thing for suits and pencil skirts. The pants’ hem is higher, the legs may be wide. Asymmetric skirt hems are big. Thus, when your style is Artisan it’s a time to stock up on high quality pieces for the drought times of straight hems.

My favorite fall office wear trend? Leather skirt suits! You know, I love leather and leather has always been part of my signature style. You can read more about how to style two leather pieces without looking like a rocker at the link.

The 70s will never die: Fringe, flowers, embroidery, and patchwork

And again there is a throw back to the 70s. In both cases, avoid to style the pieces like we did back then. See the link for how to master fall’s trickiest trend: 70s.

Flowers – often as embroidery or jacquard – are everywhere

Embroidery is tricky on anyone. I wrote an entire post about how to look ageless in embroidery. An embroidered top is a cheap option to adopt the trend. When you love embroidery invest into a hand embroidered classic traditional blouse in cross stitch. I like embroidery in the Indian Cashmere style on mules, slides and slippers.

Floral as print or embroidery on everything

When you already own a high quality classic winter coat and look for a cheap statement coat, an embroidered or floral print coat would be great trendy options. Such a coat adds a lot color to the crowd of black, brown, navy and gray winter coats. You can be sure you will be noted and the colors lift the mood on a gray winter day. You can read more about how to create a winter coat wardrobe at the link.

Fringes are everywhere, but be aware of their bulk factor

On coats, skirts, bags, jackets and jeans. On the skirts as hems or all over. On skirts, the fringe hem version is better as it doesn’t add weight to the tights or hips. Resist to style your fringe piece like in the 70s Flower Power style. The safest take on this trend is a fringe bag.

Plaid shirts come in a new cut

Personally, I prefer the straight classic sleeves and a fitted cut for plaid shirts. In my opinion, puffy sleeves in plaid or plaid with ruffles are the best candidates to become the entertainment of a future family reunion. Just imaging how embarrassed the wearer will be when the future kids find photos of her in this trend when browsing albums of past family reunions on the computer. 😉

Go for plaid skirts in a classic cut – pencil, straight or A-line – whatever flatters you best. It’s a great piece for the office. A classic plaid shirt that doesn’t read cowgirl is also always in style for the weekend and running errands.

Not just blue velvet

Velvet is still having its moment. Thus, you can recycle your pieces from last winter when you had jumped the band wagon on velvet last year already. A velvet blazer in a neutral color is perfect with jeans and a T-shirt or layering top on Casual Friday. Wrap dresses are an evergreen classic and look great in velvet.

When you love velvet and often need at classic evening gown in winter, you may think about investing in a classic tailored velvet gown with bolero or little jacket.

Baby, it’ll be cold outside

When you would take the runway shows for fall as an indicator for the temperature of the upcoming winter, they would indicate a cold one. Cozy oversize knits were everywhere. When you want to adopt this trend, invest in a loose, but not oversize Irish cable-knit sweater instead of a cheap acrylic oversize piece. Irish cable-knit sweaters are timeless. Read more about Irish cable-knit sweaters and their history at the link.

Polka pots

Polka dots are an evergreen and a big trend right now. Thus, it’s a great opportunity to invest in an ageless high quality polka dot piece like a dress or a shirt. Avoid polka dots that have the size of a quarter or even larger. Remember, they are the uniform of clowns. 😉

Plastic

Plastic like in plastic package has a moment as a material for clothes. Just imagine to have a hot flash when wearing a plastic dress. Now to mention that even without a hot flash you will like in a sauna. Do you need another argument to skip the trend? Here is one: Plastic well conducts heat. This means your body heat will escape in no time thru your plastic coat and you are standing in the cold of winter catching a cold while waiting for the bus. That’s for teenagers, not for us.

Lace looks best without any froufrou

Lace looks best as the statement itself. Streamlined cuts look great in lace like a sheath dress, top or a lace pencil skirt. Other cuts to look timeless in this trend over 40 are A-cut skirts, shift dresses, collarless tops, or lined jackets.

Shiny lace looks cheap. Also remember, anything shiny could look fattening. Typically, lace in silk and cotton looks high quality.
