Sneakers Are Having a Moment (Again)

Sneakers are an It item this season. Well, they had been It in the 1980s when everybody run around with a pantsuit and sneakers at work. On weekends, it was washed-out jeans, a normcore* top, and white sneakers. We looked great and fashionably stylish back then. However, wearing the look the same way, we would look so yesteryear, and so Old Lady.

When a trend exists the second time around, make sure you know how to style it this time around to not look Old Lady and yesterday. #styletips #fashionover50 Click To Tweet

Wear the Right Pair of Sneakers

This time around, it is not the white clunky tennis shoe anymore! Go for a dressy sneaker, colorful, embellished, metallic, may be with slight wedge heel. Alternatively, go for a pair of old school fabric sneakers like Taylor Swift.

Invest in a slim, non-cluncky pair of sneakers for a posh urban look with sneakers. #sneakerstyle Click To Tweet

What We Can Learn from Karlie Kloss

Think Karlie Kloss wearing a camel coat, white jeans, slim white sneakers and a white shirt doing her famous walk.

How to Style Your Sneakers The Modern Way

This time around, you can wear your sneakers with skirts, dresses – think Taylor Swift – or pants.

Example Silver Sneakers

In the first styling example, I went for wearing the silver sneakers with leather pants, a button-up shirt, pearls, and a trench coat. The latter serves as a substitute of a blazer as a twist on Casual Friday outfits.

How to Style Old School Sports Shoes with Pants

In this look, the upper body is Euro Chic classic with a silk sweater, silk scarf, and blazer. The bottom is a pair of sleek leather jogging pants, and Keds. The type of pants and its sleekness as well as the colors tie the unusual semi-classic casual street style look together. The joggers pick-up the styling the athleisure trend. The trench coat is the rainy day or warm season version of the camel wool coat.

How to Look Polished in Sneakers in a Nutshell

Always make sure you wear re-surfaced old trends the new way! Drop the old fashion rules like no white after Labor Day. In the case of the sports shoe trend, forget about wearing white tennis shoes with white socks blue acid wash jeans and a wide shoulder blazer and/or sweater. So 1980s, so Old Lady. Also avoid styling them with a pantsuit. Instead, wear a sleek version that clearly states “I am not for the gym.” Style them like an oxford dress shoe.
