Mother’s Day background
The origin goes back to women’s organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis who held workshops to improve sanitary conditions. One of her goals was to decrease infant mortality. During the U.S. Civil War (1861 to 1865), the groups she had organized, helped wounded soldiers from both the Union and Confederates. After the Civil War, these women and Jarvis held Mother’s Friendship Day picnics to mourn fallen women and men and to work for peace.
Three years after Ann Reeves Jarvis’ death, her daughter Anna Jarvis incarnated Mother’s Day in the U.S. in 1908 to honor motherhood. In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in the U.S. to be observed on the the second Sunday in May. The holiday quickly improved the economy. Thus, because of the economic benefits today many countries observe Mother’s Day, some of them on a different date. Anna Jarvis didn’t jump the bandwagon of commercialization, and instead spent the rest of her life fighting it.
Your mother’s Mother’s Day
When you are in your late 40s or older and want to honor your mother with a visit on Mother’s Day, remember that she is from the WWII or pre-war generation. For them Sunday’s Best is a big thing and wearing nice clothing is important. Thus, dress up. An abstract print skirt like the one in the first photo of this post with a white shirt will certainly please her. Don’t forget a great gift for her is also that you wear nice shoes.
LBD is a great Mother’s Day dinner and concert outfit
Did you, your dad or siblings arrange a dinner at a fancy restaurant in town and a concert afterwards? Then you can’t go wrong with a LBD like the one in the photo above. Alternatively, a lace overlay dress like the one in the photo below is a great option. It may also work for an afternoon wedding.
A floral dress is great for a Mother’s Day brunch
A floral print is very feminine. Thus, for less formal events like a brunch a fit-and-flare or midi shirt floral dress are great options. I like the dresses in the photo above and below. I would wear the black floral print jacquard dress with a low block heel in a color of the print and a clutch in another color of the print, a pearl necklace, a gold colored watch, and diamond or Swarovski studs. I would style the dress below with a pendant necklace, pearl studs, and strappy heels in a metallic or neutral color. This dress looks great with a small shoulder bag or a medium size (not larger than an iPad) cream leather clutch. A new bag would also be a great Mother’s Day gift.
What will you do on Mother’s Day? Have you picked your outfit already? How do you like the above clothes? Which one would you wear?

Top of the World OOTDs
The Top of the World Style Winner is picked by a random generator from the party two weeks ago. The reasons are as follow: Each party runs a week minus 5 minutes. At the time of scheduling a new party, the old party is still in full swing and blogger still can join. To give all guests the same chance, the old party has to have closed before drawing the winner. In plain English, the Top of the World Style Winner visited the linkup party two weeks ago.
The winner of this week’s feature is Abril, the blogger at The Color Palette who submitted her winning post at the 106th linkup party. She really rocks this jumpsuit! A great vacation look!
The post by Yvonne at Funky Forty became Top of the World OOTD Readers’ Fav as you clicked her post the most. In Alaska, PJs outside are an eternal classic. It’s interesting that the PJ outside of the bedroom trend pops up again and again in fashion elsewhere. In the 80s, I had a red jersey PJ. I wouldn’t wear that one now. However, this time around, PJs look much dressier and we over 40 can rock the fancy slightly fitted versions as Yvonne demonstrates so well with her outfit post. ❤
Jennie, the blogger at A Pocketful of Polka Dots, became Top of the World OOTD My Fav. She really rocks Bonnie’s style. ❤
