Can You Wear A Leather Biker Vest Over 50?

Yes, yes, yes! Of course, somehow leather biker vests are associated with outdoor concerts outfits paired with shorts and a Tee or motorcycle groups cruising the highways in a T-shirt under the iconic leather motorcycle vest. In other words, with summer and leisure time. In the look of today’s post, I style the iconic piece to wear for Casual Friday.

… and yes, I’m over 50 and I love my leather biker vest. So why not wear it over 50? I always have felt great in leather. And you can look posh in leather over 40 too.

Up a Look of Jeans and Sweater with a Vest

In fall, a simple cotton sweater like in the photo can be a little bit chilly at below freezing temperatures, which we had that morning. You can see the frost on the grass in the photos. However, under a vest the sweater intended for cool summer days works still in fall. Just think of the look as a late the many summer-to-fall transition outfit ideas. A pair of well fitted dark jeans is always a great choice for Casual Friday year round. The sweater adds a pop of color to the otherwise neutral look of black, night blue and metal color.

Add Some Accessories for Interest

In this example, I accessorized with a gemstone belt and gemstone and amber earrings to create some points of interest. Also I wanted to set off the androgen vibe of the jeans, vest and loafer. Pieces all originally invented for men. More tips to use accessories to up your style at the link.

Wear a Motorcycle Vest with a Skirt

In summer, when it gets chilly, wear a biker vest the same way you would wear a biker jacket with a dress or skirt and a T-shirt. During the summer to fall transition, you can wear the vest for extra insulation over pieces from summer. Later in fall, style it like you would wear a knit vest.

Analogously, you can style a down vest. However, how to wear a puffer vest also has to consider the aspect of still looking lean.

Vest and Outerwear in an Outfit

Even though we have no snow on the ground yet – we had quite some chinooks which permit non-seasonal  in October. After all that rain from July to October – it is chilly in the mornings. Thus, a light coat is in order at temperatures just below the freezing point. I chose to wear my white embroidered coat. The color still sets a nice contrast to the landscape and of course it’s a nice contrast to the dark denim. The floral embroidery adds pops of colors and lightens up the mood (at least mine). To keep my neck warm I added a white Russian scarf with floral print. You can find a lookbook with typical outfits for Interior Alaska in October at the link.

Stylist tip: Don’t wear your coat open, when you wear a vest unless the vest is buttoned up.

It’s important to style your outerwear with the same attention than your outfit. Outwear is an outfit too. Always check what from the outfit underneath will show in your outerwear look. When pieces of the outfit underneath are covered by the outerwear, but don’t match the vibe or style of the outerwear, keep your outwear closed. Always! No matter how bad your hot-flashes are. It’s all about looking great, babe. Or as my late Mom would say “who wants to look beautiful must suffer.”

In the example of this post, the vest wouldn’t look great with the coat when I would wear the coat open. You can find more about how to create outerwear outfits in the post at the link.
