What to wear with mustard yellow is a question I often get from my readers. This fascinating color pops up as a trend perennially, so it’s almost a classic or evergreen. Nevertheless, many people find it hard to wear because of its quite different vibe than most fashion colors. In this post, I demonstrate the answer with example outfit ideas for a mustard yellow sweater. When you are a deep autumn/ deep winter, this color belongs to your palette. Light to fair skin tones with neutral or warm undertone look best in this dark yellow. However, in contrast to many other colors, this extremely warm color flatters all complexions. When you feel not comfortable wearing mustard close to your face, but love the color/trend, try it for your bottoms. Just add a top in a matching color from your season.
The best neutrals to wear with mustard yellow are black, gray, white, navy, burgundy, indigo, and tan. In deed, navy blue is the complementary color of mustard. For a colorful, bold look try fuchsia, magenta, red, mauve, purple, teal, blue-green, hunter-green, turquoise, or emerald green.
This color is bold, but doesn’t overwhelming the senses like pure bright yellow does. However, it’s not neutral. Nevertheless, it offset other shades astonishingly well. Therefore, and because of its muddy (muted) appearance, it has a sophisticated, professional vibe. As a result, styling mustard is not as hard to style as other fashion colors or the primary bright yellow.
The latter can easily read kiddo, crayons, or vacation on a mature woman. Wearing neon yellow over 40 is even more risky than the pure color.
Avoid to go over board color-wise. Just pick one additional matching color. Then style the look around these two. The easiest way is to add accessories, shoes, and a bag in these two colors. An exact match is not required.
Another option is to use accessories that among others have the two colors. If you go that route, ensure that you repeat your two main colors three times in the outfit.
