Indoor humidity is the reason a room can be set to 74 degrees (23.3oC) and still feel wrong. The thermostat says you’re comfortable. Your hair, your linen shirt, and the back of your neck disagree, and turning the temperature down doesn’t fix it, because temperature was never the problem.
It’s also the reason a favorite leather bag comes out of the closet in September with a bloom on it: same cause, different casualty.

What Humidity Does To What You Own
The wardrobe consequences are the ones people notice last and mind most.
Humid air is hard on natural fibers, leather, and anything stored in a closed space with no air movement. Leather bags and shoes are the usual casualties, followed by any wool put away for a season without much thought.
A few habits help, and none of them are expensive:
- Don’t pack a closet solid. Air needs to move between things, and a crammed rail is a still-air pocket.
- Leave a gap between hanging garments and the wall, particularly on an exterior wall, where the temperature of the surface swings furthest as the air conditioning cycles. That swing is exactly the condition that produces condensation.
- Store leather with room around it rather than sealed in plastic, which traps whatever moisture is already in there with it.
- Put seasonal storage somewhere with real air circulation, not the back of a closet you never open.
And deal with a damp patch or a musty smell in the week you notice it, not the month. That urgency has a specific basis, which comes next.

Why The Thermostat Number Isn’t The Whole Story
Comfort comes from a combination of air temperature and how much moisture that air already holds.
Sweat is how the body sheds heat, and it only works if the moisture has somewhere to go. In dry air, it evaporates off your skin, and you cool down. In humid air it doesn’t, so you stay warm and slightly damp at a temperature that would feel pleasant anywhere else.
That’s why the instinct to drop the thermostat another two degrees usually disappoints. You end up with a cold, clammy room and a higher bill, which is worse than where you started. The fix is to take water out of the air, not take more heat out of it.
The Indoor Humidity Range To Aim For
There’s a defined target, and it beats guessing.
The EPA’s guidance on moisture in the home recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, and ideally between 30% and 50%. It also notes you can measure this yourself with a small humidity meter, which it prices at $10 to $50 and which any hardware store carries.
That single purchase changes the conversation in a house. Instead of arguing about whether it feels muggy, you can see that the hallway is sitting at 68% and do something about it.
The EPA makes a few other practical points too. Condensation collecting on windows, walls or pipes signals high humidity rather than being merely a cosmetic annoyance. Appliances that produce moisture, including clothes dryers, should vent outside wherever possible. And if wet or damp materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold will not grow, which is why that damp patch is a this-week problem.

What Your Air Conditioner Is Actually Doing
Here’s the part most people never hear: an air conditioner is a dehumidifier that also happens to cool.
As warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses and drains away. That’s what the condensate line under the unit is for, and it’s why a properly working system leaves a house feeling crisp rather than merely cool.
There is a practical consequence: A system oversized for the space cools the air quickly, which satisfies the thermostat. As a result, the system shuts off before it has run long enough to remove much moisture. The result is a house that hits its target temperature and still feels damp. Short, frequent cycles are worth noticing for exactly this reason.
It also means anything that reduces airflow across that coil reduces dehumidification, not just cooling.
The Maintenance That Keeps It Working
Most humidity complaints in an otherwise adequate system trace back to maintenance nobody did.
ENERGY STAR recommends checking the air filter every month, particularly during heavy-use months, and changing it at minimum every three months. A dirty filter slows airflow and makes the system work harder, wasting energy and letting dust build up inside the equipment.
Its maintenance checklist is more specific about what a professional visit should include for cooling. Know these before anyone quotes you a price:
- Clean the evaporator and condenser coils. Dirty coils reduce the system’s ability to cool, so it runs longer and wears out sooner.
- Check the refrigerant level and adjust as required. Too much or too little makes the system less efficient and shortens its life.
- Clean and adjust the blower components for proper airflow. ENERGY STAR notes that airflow problems can cut a system’s efficiency by up to 15 percent.
The checklist also makes the scheduling point plainly: check the cooling system in the spring, because contractors get busy once the season arrives.
One item that isn’t on any manufacturer’s list but matters in humid climates: keep the condensate pipe clear. That line carries away everything the system pulls out of your air, and when it clogs, the water backs up somewhere you’d rather it didn’t.
When The System Has Stopped Keeping Up
Some symptoms are maintenance. Some are a system that needs looking at.
Call a professional if you notice:
- The house reaches temperature but stays humid, or windows fog on the inside
- The system runs almost continuously without getting there
- Short cycles, switching on and off every few minutes
- A musty smell when the air handler starts
- Visible moisture around the indoor unit, or water where the condensate line runs
- Rooms that behave completely differently from one another
Don’t wait those out. A system struggling with moisture also creates the conditions the EPA warns about. In a place like South Florida, where the humid stretch runs most of the year, people searching for air conditioning repair in West Palm Beach are usually describing exactly these symptoms rather than a system that has stopped entirely. Wherever you live, a system that cools but won’t dehumidify is a real fault, not something to put up with until it dies.

The Bottom Line
Buy a humidity meter and find out what your rooms are actually doing. Aim below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%. Change the filter monthly, have the coils and blower checked before the season starts, and keep the condensate line clear. Recall regular maintenance can cut future repair costs.
If the house hits its temperature and still feels damp, that’s the system telling you something, not a climate you have to accept. Thermal comfort in a humid place is mostly a moisture problem, and moisture problems have answers. So does the bloom on the leather bag.
