Wedding fashion offers couples the chance to display their shared vision and individual personalities thru their attire. Instead of looking at the bride’s style or the groom’s look as separate elements, this is the moment to create a unified aesthetic that reflects who you are together.

Let’s explore how you can bring harmony and individuality to your wedding day.

Setting the Tone: How to Choose a Shared Style Aesthetic as a Couple

Before you dive into the details, such as color or accessories, discuss the atmosphere your wedding should have. Are you envisioning a classic, timeless wedding with elegant details or something more relaxed and modern with an emphasis on individuality?

When considering this aspect, don’t forget that your engagement ring can play a subtle yet important role in complementing your looks. It may feature a vintage design, so might serve as a basis for the overall look of your wedding attire.

Best Way of Color Coordination without Matchy-Matchy

While you want to ensure that your outfits work together, there’s no need for you both to wear the exact same color or fabric. On the contrary, a head-to-toe matching of your outfits can come off as overly staged. Thus, instead, think about how colors can flow harmoniously between the two of you.

For example, if the bride is wearing an ivory gown, the groom can complement her with a suit in a similar shade, such as light beige or dove gray. Aim for a visual connection that makes your look look like a piece of art. Together, your pieces should tell a story about you as a couple without looking like you’ve stepped out of a catalog.

What Are the Best Ways of Accessorizing as a Pair

The bride might choose something like a dramatic veil, a statement necklace, hair jewelry, or a delicate pair of earrings to accessorize on the big day. For many grooms, matching their bride’s accessories can feel like a challenge.

To compose a cohesive image:

  • Consider the bride’s jewelry style: If the bride is wearing vintage-inspired jewelry or pearls, the groom should wear cufflinks and/or a pocket watch, as these pieces also carry a vintage aesthetic. A seal ring is also a great option.
  • Tie bar and pocket square: For a subtle yet effective coordination, a tie bar that matches the bride’s wedding band or a pocket square or suspenders in a color that reflects the bridal bouquet or dress accent can be a great option.
  • Metal choices: If the bride’s accessories are gold, platinum, or rose gold, consider coordinating your wedding band, cufflinks, or watch in a similar metal.
  • Incorporate a family heirloom: Wearing something passed down thru the family can add personal meaning and style to the groom’s ensemble.

On a side note: We had matching engagement rings that we use as wedding bands, and my brooch and his tie holder had the same decoration and color.

Design Your Appearance with Fabric Choices that Flow Together

The texture and weight of your attire’s fabrics should work together to create a unified appearance. Consider the flow and feel of the materials in the bride’s and groom’s outfits.

If the bride is wearing a flowing, ethereal chiffon gown, the groom might complement the big picture with a lightweight wool or linen suit. These materials are equally breathable and soft. Many grooms are opting for a more modern look, stepping away from the traditional black tuxedo. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different textures to find what works best for your style.

Pre-Wedding Events: Stepping Out in Sync

Wedding style doesn’t stop at the ceremony. Rehearsal dinner fashion and the morning-after brunch give your guests a preview of the bigger picture on the day of the ceremony. Reinforce the connection between the two of you with coordinated looks throughout the pre-wedding festivities.

Remember that the key to successful coordination isn’t perfection; it’s balance. Embrace the idea of complementing, rather than copying, each other. A wedding day is an opportunity to showcase both your unity and your distinctiveness. Doing so thoughtfully will elevate your entire celebration, allowing you both to feel at your very best while also celebrating the love you share.
