Disclosure: Ad. The iPhone Photography by Kelby is a book sample of my choice from Rocky Nook Books. The post is not endorsed by them. I wrote it entirely myself and it represents my own 100% honest opinion.

Why I Wanted to Review Kelby’s The iPhone Photography Book

Full disclosure: I don’t have an iPhone. Cell phones don’t function in Alaska once you are about 35 miles (about 56 km) away from a community because Alaska is only 2% developed. Thus, you have no connection when you need it most, i.e. in the Wild. However, I love taking photos. Schlepping a camera wherever I go, is annoying and heavy. Thus, I was curious what kind of photography you could do with an iPhone. I mean beyond snapshots.

I Was So Impressed That I Will Get an iPhone

After unpacking the book, I flipped thru the pages. My honest reaction was

Wow! These photos were taken with an iPhone?!

I was hooked! I dug into the book like eating my favorite dessert – chocolate mousse. The example iPhone photos looked like examples from a photography art class!

Kelby Provides Great Explanations on How to Take the Best iPhone Photos

Well, the book definitely answered my question whether one can take the kind of photos I had in mind.

Yes, you can!

Read on why The iPhone photography book ups your skills in taking photos with a phone. The author well explains the iPhone essentials needed to take the best photos. He covers image composition with why it’s important, and how to get it right.

… and yes, many of Kelby’s advices are also valid for other cell phone brands.

What Else to Expect?

Scott Kelby is not only a professional photographer, but also a bestselling author. He knows how to write and present material, and he has years of expertise in the subject. In this book, he covers a lot of material from close-ups, over portraits to landscapes. However, he well organized the layout of his book. Consequently, you won’t need to read it cover-to-cover when you are interested in just a niche (e.g., landscapes, food shoots, travel, people).

After reading the iPhone and image composition fundamentals, you can jump to the chapter that covers the kind of photography you are interested in. That’s an effective use of your time. It also makes the book easy to use, even when you are new to the art of photography.

Best! Every page covers a single concept. This means you can learn as you go after learning the essentials.

I particularly like the inspirational chapter on what to shoot. It’s an eye opener to see more of the world around us. It’s nearly a science approach of making something obvious that everybody sees, but fails to realize.

2 pages of The iPhone Photography book to why the iPhone photography book ups your skills
Each concept page starts with a photo of either the result or how to perform the technique. Then an easy-to-understand explanation of how to take the photo follows. The simple to the point concept of presenting the material is why The iPhone Photography ups your skills. All you have to do is to apply the well laid out steps.

Kelby’s The iPhone Photography Is Great Value for Its Price

The book cost $29.95. That’s a bargain for a book that covers material of a 101 or 201 college level art photography class. You can buy the book at Rocky Nook.

Who Will Love the Book?

Any fashionista and fashionister will love his tips on how to pose people for photos, and on how to to photograph them. This book is a Must-have for their everyday life when they want to increase the numbers of Likes on any social media platform.

Beauty and lifestyle bloggers will love it for the tips on and tricks regarding close-ups. Travel and lifestyle blogger will find a lot of material that helps shooting perfect images of landscapes. You get the idea, why

Why should Joe and Jane Doe buy the book? Memories! You want them to look the best! The first photo of the new-born, entering kindergarten, winning a soccer game, vacation photos, graduation from high school, etc. Well, and because of his great advice on how to organize a photo library.

You want to find them when you want to show them, right?

I strongly recommend this book to my fellow bloggers, friends including my readers and family, i.e., everyone.

I’ve heard the latest iPhone cameras are amazing – journalists are shooting reports on them. I have a Samsung but would be keen to improve my phone photography.

This is such a great suggestion, Nicole. We (my non-professional photographer husband) and I are always looking for new ideas for photos. It would be nice to not have to take my larger camera everywhere and just use our iphones! Thanks for the recommendation.

Chrissy, it’s written in general, not for a specific iPhone edition.

  8. Chrissy Rowden

Do you know if it has updated information for the later releases of the iPhone?

The first chapter is related and specific to iPhones. But everything else applies to all smart phones and even cameras.

I’m assuming this covers all smartphones, not just iphones??
