Disclosure: Ad. The striped T-shirt is a sample of my choice from Marine Layer. The post is not endorsed by them. I entirely wrote it myself and it expresses my 100% honest opinion.

Who Is Marine Layer?

Have you ever heard of Marine Layer? I hadn’t until last month Eliza from Marine Layer asked me whether I would like to review their products. Marine Layer is a young company out of California. The shirts are sewn by adults in California, i.e. made in America. Marine Layer has a couple of stores, but if there is no store in your area or state, don’t worry. They have a great online store as well plus a 1 year return and exchange policy!

Do Marine Layer T-Shirts have a Great Craftsmanship?

After I saw their web page and this striped T-shirt I had to accept her offer. I was looking for a boat-neck stripped T-shirt in a different color combination than the usual navy-white or white-red all summer! As you know I love striped tops. But I always have a hard time to find one that meets my quality criteria. I want that at the darts, the stripes match up exactly, and that the fabric is as soft as soft-ice cream on a very hot day.

Stylist tip: Before buying a striped shirt, make sure the stripes really line up at the darts.

Is Micro-Modal Sustainable?

Well, this Marine Layer T-shirt meets both these criteria. The micro-modal fabric is incredibly soft. I wish my PJs were that soft – sigh! Another plus, micro-modal is made from beech trees that are deep-rooting plants. This means the material is natural and from a sustainable source of raw material.

Zoom in on the side darts of the striped T-shirt from Marine Layer. The stripes of the fabric match up exactly at the darts. Note that the other side and sleeves look the same (therefore not shown)

The T-shirt also meets the second criterion.

As you can see in the photo above the stripes match perfectly at the darts. From far you don’t even see that this striped T-shirt has a pocket (photo below). Match up of the stripes of the fabric is a sign for high attention to detail, commitment to excellent craftsmanship, and high quality. Take a close look at the front view of the striped T-shirt from Marine Layer. The pocket is sewn on in such a great way that the stripes keep on running. No interruption of the stripes what’s so ever. It is critical for a striped T-shirt to not look cheap.

Are Marine Layer T-Shirts Worth the Money?

On first view, they are a little bit more expensive than the average T-shirt. However, it’s much better to pay a little more for a T-shirt that you really like and doesn’t look cheap. And, it is not that much more! All Marine Layer T-shirts are in an affordable price range even when you are on a budget.

3 for $90, is not bad – not bad at all! 🙂

Further arguments are the great craftsmanship, made in America, which means less pollution for transport, no child work, and the material is from sustainable resources and super soft.

They also have scarves. Before I forget. This T-shirt also comes with short sleeves. But as you know, I love 3/4 sleeves. <3

How To Style this Tee?

The Marine Layer striped T-shirt is very versatile and easy to style. Think of an evergreen California Casual Style look with cutoffs or a corduroy mini skirt, flat brown gladiator sandals, straw bag, aviators, gold pendant necklace, and a trilby hat. Given the stripes Nautical Style or maritime outfits  are a no-brainer. This T-shirt would also seamlessly fit into the typical “Alaskan on vacation style” with a printed Bermuda shorts, super-sized backpack, flip flops and baseball hat.

Striped Tee Outfit Ideas

In the first photo, I styled the Marine Layer striped T-shirt in a gamine style way – read American Classic with a French insouciance aka French Style. I paired it with a trench coat, boyfriend jeans, rain boots, satchel bag, long matching pendant necklace, and a leopard print umbrella. In the photo above, I went for an American casual way with driving shoes, boyfriend jeans and a necklace giving the Marine Layer T-shirt the star role in this weekend look. In the photo below, I styled the Marine Layer T-shirt with a denim jacket and linen pants for a Casual Friday work outfit. The denim stripes and sand color pick up the colors of the jacket and pants perfectly. This color combination of the stripes is so unexpected and makes a classic look stand out of the crowd.
