Disclosure: Ad. Gloria Zhang’s book “A Woman’s Guide to Inner Child Healing: Overcome Trauma, Recognize Your Feelings, Learn to Let the Past Go, and Become the Best Version of Yourself” is a sample of my choice from Ulysses Press. Ulysses Press and Dr. Zhang did not endorse this review. I wrote it entirely myself and it represents my own 100% honest opinion.

Disclaimer: I am not a psychotherapist or relationship coach. Therefore, I cannot judge the material as a peer. This means my review of A Woman’s Guide to Inner Child Healing covers my opinion as a reader of the book.

What Is the Central Argument of the Book?

The main idea in this book is that one can permanently escape from the cycle of emotional turmoil According to the book, unaddressed traumas during childhood cause these emotions. Such tragic life events can range from various circumstances like the loss of a parent, emotional neglect, abusive upbringing, etc.. To accomplish this breakthrough one can use a variety of intuitive exercises and informative guides crafted by an expert in psychotherapy and relationship coaching.

What Exactly Is the Subject of A Woman’s Guide to Inner Child Healing?

The topic of the book is a step-by-step guide to connect with one’s inner child. This reconnection with the younger self starts with identifying one’s core wound(s). The next steps are (re)parenting one’s inner child, and gaining closure with the trauma(s).

The book clearly articulates the four core wounds one can have. It systematically leads the reader to be able to recognize them. Doing so requires to work thru worksheets, and journal prompts. Further support are real world examples. Analogously, the book guides the reader to overcome and receive closure with the trauma(s) by parenting their younger self.

Is there Evidence for the Success of the Method Presented in the Guide?

The book is based on the author’s experience obtained from her global self-help sensation The Inner Child Podcast. The book presents her 3-step approach-feel, heal, attract-to trauma recovery and self-awakening. Evidently,  the author had made a positive experience with healing her own trauma using this method. Furthermore, she applied it successfully when working with hundreds of women as a registered psychotherapist and relationship coach.

How Did Dr. Zhang Structure Her Guide?

The book follows a logical order with respect to outlining the three phases of inner child healing. The guide consist of three parts covering these phases plus an introduction to how to use the book. Herein Dr. Zhang discourages the reader from skipping forward because they would miss important guidance.

In my understanding, this advice serves to urge the reader to reflect about the journal prompts and to go thru the worksheets. These journal prompts and worksheets require reflecting on the own childhood. Therefore, they were the pain points for me that I was tempted to skip.

However, the example answers given in the journal prompts and the real-life examples of professionally successful women awake curiosity. Consequently, one starts exploring the own childhood experiences. In my opinion, this genius move helps the reader to open up to investigate their core wound(s) despite of feeling resistant or uncomfortable to address them.
