December is New York’s most dressed-up month. The Rockefeller Center tree is lit, Fifth Avenue’s windows are on show and every restaurant is booked for holiday dinners. It is also cold, dark early and full of sudden temperature changes, from a windy sidewalk to an overheated department store to a cool theater.

The trick is dressing for all of it at once. Here is how to pack and plan your outfits so you look polished at every stop and stay warm between them.

December Weather in New York, in Numbers

According to the National Weather Service, Central Park’s average December high is about 44F and the average low is about 34F (1.1oC). The month starts milder, with normal highs near 49 F (9.4oC) on December 1, and ends colder, with highs near 42F (5.6oC) by Christmas. Wind between tall buildings makes it feel colder than the thermometer says.

The sun sets around 4:30 pm in late December, so most of your holiday sightseeing will happen after dark. That is good news for the lights and less good news for anyone in thin shoes.

The Coat Does the Heavy Lifting

Build your trip around one good coat. A long wool coat or a knee-length puffer in camel, charcoal, black or navy works over jeans in the afternoon and over a dress at night. Choose one that covers your hips, because sitting on cold benches and standing in lines is part of the season.

Add three accessories that earn their space:

  • A large scarf you can wrap twice, in cashmere or a soft wool blend. It doubles as a wrap in a chilly theater.
  • Leather gloves with touchscreen fingertips, so you can take photos without exposing your hands.
  • A knit hat or a wide headband for the nights you’ll stand outside, such as the tree or a window walk.

Shoes Make or Break the Day

Most visitors walk far more in Manhattan than they expected. Pick shoes for the distance first and the look second.

  • Weatherproof leather ankle boots with a low block heel are the December workhorse. They handle slushy crosswalks and still look right at dinner.
  • Leather sneakers in white, black or tan suit long daytime walks.
  • Heels are best saved for evenings when a car takes you door to door.

If snow is in the forecast, treat leather boots with a protective spray before the trip. Salt on city sidewalks can leave white marks.

Layer for the Inside-Outside Day

New York in December means constant temperature swings. You’ll go from 35F (1.7oC) outside to a warm store, a warmer restaurant and then a cool theater, sometimes within an hour.

Thin layers work better than one heavy sweater:

  • A fine merino or cashmere knit that fits under your coat without bulk
  • A silk or satin camisole or blouse underneath, for when you take the knit off
  • Fleece-lined or wool tights under skirts and dresses
  • A crossbody bag that keeps your hands free in crowds

What to Wear at Each Holiday Stop

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The 2026 tree arrives at Rockefeller Center on November 7, and the lighting ceremony is on Wednesday, December 2. The tree stays up into January. Expect huge crowds and street closures on lighting night. Many New Yorkers visit on a weeknight later in December instead, when the plaza is calmer.

Wear: your warmest layers and flat boots. You’ll stand outside for a while, and the plaza is packed after dark. Leave the statement clutch at the hotel and bring the crossbody bag.

The Fifth Avenue Holiday Windows

Saks Fifth Avenue unveils its 2026 windows and its famous facade light show on November 23. In past seasons the light show ran every 10 minutes from 5 to 11 pm. Bergdorf Goodman and Macy’s usually unveil their windows in mid to late November; both did so on November 20 last year. A classic route starts at Saks on 50th Street, across from the tree, and continues north to Bergdorf Goodman on 58th Street.

Wear: the same outfit as the tree, with the most comfortable boots you own. It’s an 8-block walk, but you’ll stop often, and the sidewalks are crowded.

A Broadway Show

There is no dress code on Broadway. Audiences wear everything from jeans to cocktail dresses, and smart casual is the norm. The one practical point is temperature: theaters are often colder inside than people expect, so bring a layer. Seats are tight, which makes a coat that folds small easier than a bulky puffer. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. Doors usually open about 45 minutes before the show.

Wear: dark wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse and a fine-knit cardigan, or a knit midi dress with tights and ankle boots. Skip jangling bangles and anything that clicks or beeps during the performance.

A Holiday Dinner

This is the night for velvet, satin and a little shine. A velvet blazer over a silk camisole, a satin slip skirt with a cashmere sweater, or a sequined top with black trousers all feel festive without trying too hard. Sheer black tights and a sleek heel finish the look.

Wear: your best pieces, and plan the ride so you aren’t walking 10 blocks in them.

Make the Evening Easy With a Car That Waits

A typical December evening in Manhattan strings three stops together: the tree or the windows, dinner, then a show. Doing that in heels, in the cold, with shopping bags, is where most holiday plans fall apart. Taxis are scarce when theaters let out, and rideshare prices change with demand on busy nights.

Booking a chauffeur by the hour solves most of it. The car waits between stops, the shopping bags and a spare pair of flats stay in the trunk, and nobody stands on a corner with a phone in the cold. Artisan Limo, a premium chauffeured black car service in New York, offers hourly service from $120 an hour with a three-hour minimum, and the full price is shown before you book. There is no surge pricing on its sedans and SUVs, so a Saturday night in December costs the same per hour as a Tuesday morning.

A December Weekend Packing List

  • One warm coat in a dark neutral
  • Two fine knits and one silk or satin top
  • Dark jeans and one pair of tailored trousers
  • One dress or skirt for dinner and the theater
  • Wool or fleece-lined tights
  • Weatherproof ankle boots, plus one dressier shoe
  • Scarf, touchscreen gloves and a hat
  • A crossbody bag and a small evening bag
  • A compact umbrella
  • A rich moisturizer and lip balm, because cold air outside and heated rooms inside dry out skin quickly
