As the daylight increases, most of us look forward to spring. However, at high and mid latitudes, there are still two or three months of cold weather ahead, respectively. Depending on the location, we have been wearing the same coat for a couple of months and are eager for a new look when heading out the door. This may even apply to the gals in the south, even though their winter temperatures never fall below freezing. When you want an update, read on. This review addresses a light wool-blend winter coat that is perfect for keeping you comfortable and in style for the rest of this winter. Given its classic-with-a-twist cut, making it your go-to piece at the beginning and end of the next winters to come.

Disclosure: The Carol women’s black double-breasted wool-blend Trench coat reviewed in this post is a sample of my choice from F Jackets. I wrote the post myself, and all opinions are mine and 100% honest. F Jackets did not endorse this review article.

What Is the Advantage of Choosing a Wool-Blend?

Blending fibers enables the creation of fabrics that combine the benefits of both fibers. Wool has a low thermal conductivity (0.04 W/m· K), making wool fabric a good insulator. On the contrary, the thermal conductivity of cotton or linen, for instance, is much higher, which is a reason why you feel cold fast in these fabrics in winter.

F Jackets‘ “The Woolmaker” coat is a 60% wool 40% polyester blended outer layer and 100% polyester. This blend provides the following advantages:

    1. Low maintenance of this wool-blend. The cleaning of a 100% wool felt coat requires a dry cleaner, while a coat made with a 60% wool 40% polyester blended outer layer and 100% polyester lining, like the F Jacket’s “The Woolmaker” coat, can be washed in a delicate cold wash cycle (30oC Cycle). Thus, you save money and time.
    2. Less wrinkles.A positive property of wool is its wrinkle resistance. Any fibers blended with wool benefit from wool’s wrinkle-resistance. The higher the wool content, the fewer the wrinkles.
    3. Pure wool can hold up to 30% of its dry weight in water without feeling wet. Thus, when the relative humidity is high, or it rains, a pure wool coat can become up to 30% heavier than in dry weather. However, polyester is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t readily absorb water. Therefore, a wool-polyester blend means that the coat’s weight remains almost the same no matter whether the weather is rainy or dry and sunny.
    4. The polyester in the wool-polyester blend increases the coat’s durability. This means the coat retains its shape longer and, hence, makes your coat wardrobe more sustainable. Nevertheless, the coat remains breathable.

Therefore, F Jackets refines outerwear by offering jackets and coats in 60%/40% wool-polyester blends in contemporary cuts and iconic styles.

The Cut: Classic Trench Coat with a Twist

The coat has Princess seams, which are vertical lines. The double-breast button design of the trench coat also means vertical lines. Because vertical lines give the illusion of height, the coat has a slimming effect. Of course, its black color also contributes to the slimming effect.

Folds for Comfortable Movement

At the front waist, the cut features a fold on each side of the button line. These folds are flat and add about 2 inches on each side to the skirt’s width without adding bulk. Consequently, the overall shape remains a slim silhouette. However, these extra four inches allow for large steps, climbing on a bus or truck, and even equipment. I have no problem getting into our Jeep Wrangler when wearing the coat.

Fit-and-Sizing Is True to the Size Chart

According to the size chart, I am a size XS. I ordered the coat in this size, and it fits perfectly in the shoulders, sleeves, waist, and my bum. In other words, the size and cut match the measures given in the size chart.

What Else I Like about F Jackets

The garment has four buttons on each side and one button on the inside, as is typical for a Trench coat cut. came with an extra button. I really like that F Jacket was so thoughtful to provide an extra button. Thus, one doesn’t have to replace and sew on eight buttons because one was lost.

Excellent Price-Performance Ratio

Originally, the Carol women’s black double-breasted wool Trench coat was $274. It is now available for $189, and after a discount, for $169.

As mentioned, the type of blend is very durable. If you live in a warm state like Florida or a warm country like Spain or Portugal, this coat will suit you all winter, and the cost-per-wear will be below $1 after 2 winters at the latest.

When you live in the Pacific Northwest or western Europe, the cost-per-wear will be below $1 in the first winter because you must wear a coat more often than our sisters in warmer-winter climates.

In northern Canada, northern and Interior Alaska, or Siberia, where there are two or more months with temperatures below -40F (-40oC), this coat would be too cold for these conditions. However, as mentioned, the coat’s insulation is perfect for temperatures around and above freezing. Therefore, I expect to be able to wear the coat at the beginning and the end of several winters. Because of its contemporary classic-with-a-twist style, the coat will not look dated even in four or five years. This means ladies in these climate zones can also benefit from the enhanced durability, and have a beautiful coat with a low cost-per-wear.
