The messages a suit sends in fashion over 40
I had an important meeting at work for which I had to “dress up”. When you are a regular reader of my blog, you may know that I am not a big fan of regular suits. On young women, they read “mature, professional.” However, on us over 40, a real suit easily reads “conservative, old fashioned.” Unfortunately, these attributes are also often associated with not being up-to-date and not being creative, and past your prime. These things are nothing we want to be associated with. Thus, women over 40 have to be creative to convey the messageI am on top of things! Click To Tweet
Go for an unmatched suit instead
It’s unfair, isn’t it? Thus, I paired my white blazer with my tweed skirt that has some white and teal accents in the otherwise black fabric. I added a teal cashmere wool mix sweater which is considered work appropriate in cold climate regions in winter. Yes, and it was really cold! We had another cold snap. It just missed 40 below zero by a small margin.
If your work dress code requires a real suit, you may find this post on how to wear a suit and not look old over 40.
You can find tips to wear unmatched suits at the link.
At work, I slipped in my pumps that I brought in my a shoes bag in my inside my bag. Because of the need to schlep shoes back and forth in winter, and to have a cardigan handy when it gets chilly in the evening in summer most of my bags are huge.
Do you switch shoes at work in winter? What do you wear to an important meeting at the office in winter? What are your challenges to not look old fashioned/conservative when you have to dress up at work? Let me know by email so I can address them anonymously in a post.

Top of the World OOTD from the last party
To support other fashion and style bloggers, I added a new feature to the Top of the World Style linkup party. A random generator will pick one post. The blogger who submitted the post will be highlighted at the next party in addition to the Top of the World OOTD Readers’ Fav and My Fav as Top of the World Style Winner. Yes, the winner gets also a cool logo for their sidebar, featured or awards page (see below). 🙂
<a href="https://highlatitudestyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/topoftheworldstylewinneroftheweek.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-32728" src="https://highlatitudestyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/topoftheworldstylewinneroftheweek.jpg" alt="Top of the world style winner of the week" width="200" height="200" /></a>
Since the party runs a week minus 5 minutes, this feature will have temporal delay of two weeks for technical reasons. At the time of scheduling a new party, the old party is still in full swing and blogger still can join. To give all guests the same chance, the old party has to have closed before drawing the winner. In plain English, the Top of the World Style Winner visited the linkup party from two weeks ago.
The first winner of this new feature is the blogger at Stylin’ Granny Mama who submitted her winning post at the 97th linkup.
Everyone seems to be low on vitamin D this time of the year and is dreaming of summer time. Erin Howards the blogger at Happily Howards became Top of the World OOTD Readers’ Fav as you clicked her post the most. The flower print of her top and her styling create such a great summer outdoor concert feeling. Who can resist that call?
Since I was a kid, I had a knack for British family events like weddings or the Escort races. Why? Because of the hats! Whenever I was in Great Britain, I came back with at least one hat! No wonder that Jacqui the blogger at Mummabstylish became Top of the World OOTD My Fav in her very Royals looking blue skirt suit with hat. She could mingle with her Prince Charming among them without looking out of place, could they. 😉
Congrats ladies! Please grab your respective featured Top of the World OOTD button from my Linkup Page.
