How to style a trendy dress to look professional

Spring/summer trendy wardrobe up date with floral and paisley print

This green floral dress is new addition to my spring/summer wardrobe. I wanted a floral dress with abstract, read fantasy bright flowers on a dark background. The typical floral prints for summer are printed on white. These prints don’t look good on me. I tan slowly. I chose this dress because it had a dark back ground in another color than the usual black which seems the second often choice to ground a floral print. Yesterday, I saw three women wearing a black dress with some blossom pattern.

Go beyond a black or white background when buying a floral print dress for a more unique look. #personalstyle Click To Tweet

Acessorize a floral dress with a belt

This dress actually has an A-line cut (not shown), which is tricky to style when over 40. The hem namely falls like the tail of a Mermaid (see side view photo above), which may easily look too cute and/or girly. While this style is fine for young women on a weekend, it is too casual for work at any age, even on Casual Friday. Thus, I used a styling trick namely accessorizing with a belt to get the width under control.

Be aware of the change in length caused by belting

Of course, whenever you gather fabric with a belt, it means that the hem looks shorter than it actually is. When I wear this wardrobe update loose, it looks about 2 inch (5 cm) longer than when belted. When the length gets too short to look right, one of these cool underskirts may do the trick to provide the right length. 😉

I added a dark green belt, and neutral block heels for an office appropriate look. The dress is very versatile. It will also look great with my orange plateau sandals, navy blue D-Orsay open toe pumps, or black wood sole sandals. Of course, the jewelry and/or belt have to be changed to go with the vibe of the shoes. This trendy addition to my wardrobe seems to be a fun trendy piece for a season. 🙂

Pro tip:

When you wear a cheap/fast-fashion trendy item, pair it with some more expensive classic pieces to look great in fashion over 40.

Since the party runs a week minus 5 minutes, this feature will have temporal delay of two weeks for technical reasons. At the time of scheduling a new party, the old party is still in full swing and blogger still can join. To give all guests the same chance, the old party has to have closed before drawing the winner. In plain English, the Top of the World Style Winner visited the linkup party two weeks ago.
