How to update a wardrobe with trends
In late December, I reviewed the spring trends and which of them may work for us women over 40. The review led to ordering two items – a long embroidered striped shirt (see photos of me in this post) and a low-high hem velvet dress for dancing that I showed on the blog on Monday. I shared the results of my trend review on the blog last week. Last weekend, I went thru my closet to see which of the trends I already own. I stroke them off my list of trends that would work for woman over 40.
This week I made the next step towards updating my spring wardrobe. I revisited that said trend list and stroke off the trends that are not me. Then I took the trend list and started browsing Shein’s page to create a wish list.
My favorite trends
I always had a love for patches. As a kid, I collected patches and sew them to a sweater. They made the sweater very individual – so me. Patched denim jackets provide ageless style and hence work well for us over 40 over a solid dress, with dark jeans and a T-shirt or with a skirt and a top. I like this blue single breasted patch wash denim jacket as it has grown up – read not kitschy – patches. They have a similar one in camouflage that I like too. Decisions, decisions.
My wardrobe is short on skirts. Thus, I want to add a couple of new skirts for spring and summer. I like this army green velvet lace trim pleated skirt (photo below). Shein also has a similar one in gold, when army green is too edgy for you. The skirt combines the pleat, lace and velvet trends. The velvet allows to wear the skirt all year round in Alaska. In warm climate, it works for spring, fall and winter. This means one will get a lot of wear out of this skirt. It works with neutral tops (e.g. black, gray, white) or for a statement with brick red or ??? pink.
Abstract flower prints are ageless and full on trend at the moment. Thus, I want to stock up on abstract print skirts. I like this multi color midi skirt and its abstract flower print. The print looks timeless. There is nothing too girlie or too young to it. The skirt’s colors permit endless combinations with solid tops. However, I would just add one color to make it an outfit., i.e. I would try to stay out of the territory that looks like color blocking. A striped top picking up some of the skirt’s colors or a neutral twinset are great options too.
A denim skirt is also high on my wishlist. I like this dark blue denim A-line skirt. It falls nicely on the model, i.e. the skirt doesn’t look stiff. I would add a belt and wear the above look with pumps for a more sophisticated office appropriate style. A white top, pearls and red pumps would make a great posh casual look.
The “banker” style is a hot trend as well as are stripes. Thus, one can’t go wrong with a shirt like this blue lapel vertical striped blouse. Vertical stripes slim, and are a timeless classic. I picked Shein’s version of a vertical stripe shirt with embroidery for my wardrobe update (see photos of me in this post). Embroidery is also a great trend right now. 😉
Wrap dresses are an eternal summer dress classic. I like floral prints on a dark background like in the Shein V neck wrap dress in the photo above. When a wrap dress is good for the Duchess of Cambridge, it is good for us over 40 too 😉 , right?
A new dance dress was high on my spring must-have list too. I always loved velvet and wrap dresses. High-low hems are great for dancing <3 . Thus, I couldn't resist this green high-low hem velvet dress from Shein. You may have seen it already in my Focus Alaska post on Monday.
