What to wear in May in Alaska
Here is the May lookbook about what I wore up here in Interior Alaska. Since I took a staycation – as every year around this time, there are a lot of vacation style looks. Many Alaskans who grow a yard start their vegetable and flower gardens between a week after Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. It’s a balance act. Given the short vegetation season, you want to start as early as possible, but late enough not to loose your zucchinis and potatoes by some late frost.
Dressing for the weather
Well, there were those days early in May when night frost required clearing the windshield from ice in the morning. And then there were those days that required rain gear with temperatures in the 50s (10-15oC). But there were also those summer days with temperatures around 80F (26.7o) in the late afternoon. Since Alaska has only one time zone and when projected onto the Lower 48 would reach from Coast-to-Coast, local noon is much later in Fairbanks than the term suggests.
Well in May, there were also some special occasions like Mother’s Day, Graduation, Commencement, Memorial Day and Cinco de Mayo social dances that required special event-specific dressing. You don’t want to let the right outfit be a random thing. When in doubt, it’s easy to create the right look for the situation by looking up what to wear when in How to Dress for Success in Midlife. Buy my book now when you haven’t done it so far.
May work outfits
What I wore at Commencment
Well, technically speaking the outfit below is also a work outfit for me once a year when I have to attend the commencement celebration of the UAF students’ graduation. This work clothes are the most expensive in my closet and I will never get them below 1$ per wear (my criterion for a great deal). However, buying it was still cheaper than renting a gown each year. Not to mention the hassle of ordering it and mailing it back each year. The gown is pretty heavy (almost like a heavy down winter coat). Also the fabric is non-breathing and makes everyone look like an elephant. The hood normally represents the university from which you graduated. Mine is actually a merge that represents the University of Cologne (red and white) and the University of Leipzig (silvergray) from which I have my doctoral degrees in Geophysics and Meteorology, respectively. I wrote a post of how to decode the regalia a while ago. Check it out when you want to know more.
