Styling a casual winter work outfit
In this casual work outfit, I went for a gray and denim with pops of color. I combined my classic tweed skirt with a denim jacket to stay out of matronly territory. Styling tweed over 40 is tricky. Thus, I devoted an entire post to how to look modern in tweed over 40. In this post I break down how the layering was done and why.
How to create interest with different textures
Since the outfit has a lot of gray, I created interest by using different surface textures: Suede (boots), knit (tight, sweater), and coarse (skirt). Going for texture and/or different shine is essential when creating monochromatic outfits to not look boring.
How to create interest by mixing prints and stripes
This outfit also mixes print and pattern as the sweater has wide stripes in two different shades of gray (see e.g. featured photo and the first photo in this post). The mixing works because it is grounded by the gray color. Grounding the outfit with one color is a Must to get mixing prints and pattern right.
How to layer for insulation and style
The Russian scarf is a great way to add a floral print in winter and get it right. It is made from wool, a clear winter fabric. Do I have to mention that it provides great insulation too and hence keeps your neck warm? The denim jacket provides another layer that ups the style and keeps the outfit from getting matronly too.
Tying the outfit together
Don’t let the right outfit be a random thing. Wear the right look in every situation by looking up what to wear when in How to Dress for Success in Midlife. Buy the book now.
The Russian scarf also ties the denim jacket and the other gray pieces of the outfit together. The rose print namely has various shades of gray, blue and pink. The various shades of red and pink provide the pops of color and make the outfit look fresh. Thus, I can get away with minimal makeup.
