Unless you blog on wordpress.com, your sidebar is real estate for ads, campaigns and monetization of your blog. Avoid these five most common mistakes:

Using your sidebar as a pin board to “post” your awards, features, badges to linkups, affiliate badges, etc. Have an Awards, Featured, Linkup Parties, and Affiliates page instead. See the links for inspiration.

Using your blogroll as your bookmark section. Again create a blogroll page and use your browser for bookmarking pages you often visit, but may be of no interest for your readers. In your blogroll, make sure you open a new page. You want to keep the option open that your readers do not just wander away.

Having a sidebar longer than your posts. It just looks odd. The reader may wonder what the point of the post is when you have more to “say” in the sidebar. On wordpress, the visibility feature offers you the option to exclude or show widgets in the sidebar only when the post is the front page, page or post. Compare for example the sidebar of this post with that of this page.

Having your twitter feed displayed on your sidebar. These tweets are addressed at you, not them.

Displaying the facebook profile photos of your readers. The dog and cat faces and who knows what funny or not so funny profile pictures will show up randomly. You want to stay in control of what is displayed on your sidebar.

Well, from the photos in this post you see that spring is still successful in playing hide and seek. To look a little bit less like wearing a winter outfit I opted for a fedora with my motorcycle coat. My layers are also getting “thinner” with my layering top (similar here) and light trench coat (similar here) worn as blazer.

How do you adjust your outfit in the transition when it is neither really winter any more, but not spring yet either?
