Designers, please take marketing 101

When you followed the big fashion weeks, you are already familiar with the 2017 trends. Of course, most of them looked awesome on these teens or twenty something tall, super thin models with their healthy young skin. Well, you have to admit that designers could put these gorgeous models into a potato sack and they still would look stunning, just because they are. 😮

Again, despite we have the buying power, we over 40 are totally left out in the considerations of great fashion trends. I analyzed the spring 2017 trends to identify those that are suitable for us over 40.

Let’s be picky to turn fashion into personal style

The stripe trend is an ageless classic

Stripes work for us when they have the right color and direction. When you are on the thinner side, go for horizontal stripes. You can even dare colors that visibly add pounds like red or pink. When you are on the heavier side, vertical stripes are your best friends. When you are in between, both will work for you, but go for darker colors in horizontal stripes to offset the illusion of added weight. Apple shape? Create the illusion of a waist nip with dark stripes around your middle. Pear shapes, try horizontal stripes on top and a dark bottom to balance your body shape.

The seam splits – what didn’t they learn to sew?

Most of us over 40 learned to sew in senior high or high school. Remember the grades those girls got who handed in a project with split seams? Sorry, but this trend deserves nothing but an F.

The floral delivery trends works for 40+ when the floral print is abstract

As I discussed in details in my post on ageless style in floral prints, abstract floral prints look ageless. Avoid any Laura Ashley, girlie or prairie prints as they are aging or scream time’s up. Look for classic dress cuts, straight skirts or classic button-down shirts when you want to update your wardrobe with this trend.

Dare to bare

It’s all about daring to bare the mid riff! The town and office are not the beach to show off your belly button at any age. Even for our twenty something sis it should be reserved for vacation only.

How to work the “With the Band” trend

The name is new, but it nails down to the good, old Rock’N Roll trend. Stick with the trusted classics like ankle booties, the tuxedo also called “Mickey Mouse” jacket, or go into some real leather like Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers said in LA at a Dirty Dancing concert back in the 80s.

The Slim Aarons’ Ladies trend

The live of the rich and famous. Sounds like copy cat and not personal style, unless you are rich and famous. Then probably you wouldn’t read a stylist’s blog, but hire your personal stylist. Do I have to say more about this trend? By the way PJs and resort style belong into the bedroom and the resort, respectively. May be the only exception is Alaska where PJs also work for shopping the groceries.

Sorbet shades

Didn’t they learn in designing school that pastel colors visually add weight? Only go for sorbet colors that are in your palette of flattering colors. If not, skip the trend or go for a cheap annual disposal item like a Tee.

Practice gear or sports trend

Don’t go head to toe on this trend unless you are heading to the gym. Avoid baring the midriff except on the beach in a bikini. When you add a sports or practice gear item as it is called in new fashion English, don’t wear it with real white thick shock absorbing sole sports sneakers.

Bra out

Two words: Forget it!

The cascading ruffles trend

Ruffles are for little girls. They look plain ridiculous on us over 40. Ruffles look like oversize wrinkles – not exactly what we want. Read more on embellishments over 40.

It – pairing dresses with pants

Now we are talking. This trend is great for us. Sleek pants hide the spider veins, bumps and lumps and are so much more comfortable than tights. In contrast to tights, they allow sexy toe cleavage – only two slits please. The dress-over-pants look disguises love handles, and short legs. When worn in the same color, the dress-over-pants look is elongating, draws the eye up and gives the illusion of being taller and slimmer than you are. Being petite I love the “looking taller aspect” of the look. It also showcases thin ankles, i.e. one of my favorite features. ❤

One shoulder trend

It is not because I live in Alaska that I didn’t jump the band wagon on last year’s cold shoulders trend. I also will not go for its logical follow-up, the one shoulder look. Reason No. 1, the bra problem ladies! It looks great and sexy, when you can solve the bra problem. However, it’s a weekend, going out and vacation look. This means the cost per wear may be high unless you live in warm dry climate where you can wear it often. Since this look is eye-catching – read it will be remembered – you risk to look like you wear the same outfit over and over again. Furthermore, the asymmetry gives me the association with Diana – the Greek Goddess of hunting – and don’t laugh, breast cancer.

The extra-long belt trend is a do over 40

Definitively a Do, but not at all costs. Fly DIY or buy a nice high quality belt in the men’s department in your significant other’s size, wear the belt as long as the trend lasts and hand it over later. If you go DIY, get nice at least 1 inch (2.54 cm) wide woven band in the needed length (your waist measure plus 23 inches or so) plus 2 inches (5 cm) in the craft store. Add a nice belt buckle – it can be recycled from an old belt that has worn out – or new from the craft store.  The extra 2 inches are to adjust the buckle and clean the end of the belt. When you have old leather pants that show the knees and are no longer wearable, you can sew the belt using the leather of the pants. The distressed look of the leather ups the cool factor. It conveys the idea that you wore the trend long before it even became a trend.

Who doesn’t like to be a trendsetter?

The “New Takes on Shirts” trend

Miss P. wore this trend already before it was a trend and she does it well. If you go for the trend, have a look at how she styles shirts in an unusual way for inspiration. She got it right.
