Casual Friday permits expressing your style
When you are in the coporate work field or your work dress code is Business Casual, Casual Friday permits you to go a bit more comfortable. The safest way is to go for a typical work outfit that meets the dress code and swap one piece for a casual one. For instance, wearing a denim jacket instead of the usual blazer. In physical science, the dress code is casual to begin with. Thus, Casual Friday typically means that I can go a bit more edgy with my outfit like wearing leather beyond a classic pencil skirt, coat or leather blazer as long as there is no meeting scheduled on Friday. Then things become more formal and the dress code is at least business casual.
Fashion over 40 – Leather and pearls are a do
Leather is often associated with Rock’n Roll. However, the roots of wearing leather go far back in time. At least men wore leather both on week days and weekends. In Bavaria, for instance, men’s lederhosen are decorated with charm chains called charivari on Sundays, for weddings and other celebrations. Thus, adding a pearl necklace to a leather top is just adapting the idea for a woman. I love the combination of leather and pearls.
A pea-coat is an outerwear classic
When you are following this blog for a while, you will certainly remember my post on what to look for in a pea-coat. While pea coats originally were designed to be worn by men, they are perfect for women. The slight widening at the bottom gives the illusion of an hourglass shape. Which woman over 40 doesn’t love that? This cut is also so comfortable as it permits movement. Ironically, the cut was designed with sailors being able to climb masts in mind. 🙂
Alaska’s cold season requires gloves
I love styling my outerwear too. Eventhough a great pea-coat has pockets that were designed for warming the hands, I need gloves. When the car stood in the parking lot for more that nine hours, the steering wheel is ice-cold. My fingers get cold in no time without my cashmere or silk lined leather gloves. So to speak, the gloves do double duty. The gloves add to the style factor and insulate my hands. I am still looking for a navy blue pair.
Do you have a Casual Friday culture at work? What is it? Jeans and a nice T-shirt? What is your greatest style challenge when dressing for Casual Friday? Let me know by email, I am curious how I can help you.

Top of the World OOTD
Carrie, blogger at A Lovely Little Wardrobe attracted the most clicks, and hence became Top of the World OOTD Readers’ Fav. Her styling of a purple in four different outfits showed no fear of this tricky color. All outfits looked so effortlessly chic. It seemed like purple is a neutral.
Yana, blogger at A Handful of Stories became Top of the World OOTD My Fav. I love her take on wide leg trousers with a bow tie and hat. A nice tension between very feminine and menswear. The braids make the look sweet and cute. What a great look for a young woman.
