How temperature affects your look

Winter outfit

I wore this look last week. The temperatures played roller coaster. They went from -19F (-28.3o) to 19F (-7.2oC) within 24 hours and then down to -7F (-13.9oC) within half a day. Such temperature differences often occur in connection with Chinook in Fairbanks, in winter.

Of course, such temperature shifts make it hard to dress for. The best option is layering of clothes so one can take layer after layer off once it warms up. However, when the forecast calls for cold air advection, i.e. cooling during the day, I usually pack an extra cardigan or sweater in my bag. Sometimes I pack a blanket scarf to wrap it around my coat on my way back home.

Even though I have only a short way from the building to the parking lot, the additional cover is needed when temperatures are in the negative digits on the Fahrenheit scale (colder than -18oC). When it is this cold, the car has to idle some time for the transmission oil to get warm so I can punch in a gear. It also takes some time before the furnace provides heat.

Once you start driving it feels like being on a dirt road with a washboard profile. The tires are “squared” from the cold and it takes about a mile (1.6 km) for the tires to be warm enough to get back into shape. The ride first feels like the car limbs.

In this OOTD, I opted for wearing long Johns under the leather pants and a long sleeve T-shirt under the sweater. The Russian scarf adds style and insulation, but the outfit looks still neat when I have to take the scarf off. The pants have a lining. Thus, there are air layers between the long Johns and my legs, the long Johns and the lining, and the lining and the leather. A thin air layer is a great insulator. Layering is just applied physics. 😉

Top of the World Style linkup-party

Welcome to the 43rd Top of the World Style fashion linkup party. Thanks to those of you who linked up last week. You are all so stylish! I can’t wait to see what you are wearing this week.

As usual, the Readers’ Fav OOTD goes to the link you clicked the most, which was Lisa’s post. She is the blogger of Beauty 101 by Lisa. Patty from Not Dead Yet Style sent me down the memory lane with her crochet skirt and became My Fav OOTD. As a pre-teenager I started crocheting a skirt and my plan was actually a mini-skirt version of what she is wearing in the post. However, my late mom said that this kind of pattern would be unacceptable. Sure, one has to sew a matching lining that shows thru the pattern. Thus, I had to do a crocheting style that I did not like. Do I have to say that I never finished the skirt because what I was crocheting was not what I wanted to crochet?
