The best spring trends for women over 40

Trends come and go and one never knows how long they will be around. A big advantage of being over 40 is that nobody expects us to wear multiple trends and to jump onto every trend. However, we want and should update our wardrobe with some trendy items each seasons to not look old-fashioned and/or even worse Old Lady.

We can afford to be picky about our trends as we don’t need many to state “I’m up-to-date, I’m fashion forward, I’m modern, I embrace new things, I’m open for new things, I’m young.” We also can afford to spend a little more on a trend as we need fewer trendy items than when we were in our 20s. Here are my favorite trends for this spring for women our age.

Colors for 40+

This spring’s color palette has many colors that might make us look “Old Lady”. Thus, be careful with your color combinations.  Avoid wearing them your mother’s way. You know what I’m talking about, for instance, glacier gray pants with sandstone straight jacket and lavender T-shirt. Go for modern color combinations like tangerine with scuba blue or treetop green with classic blue instead.

Gingham

This tiny check is a classic. Brigit Bardot even picked it for her wedding dress. It looks great in the above spring colors. Getting a gingham shirt is a great investment. It works with jeans for the weekend or with a pencil skirt or white pants and a blazer at work or with a full skirt for play (see right photo below).

Gingham check cotton shirtdress (eShakti). I would style this with a tangerine or scuba blue belt and matching pumps for work and brown sandals, wood bangles, a painted beats necklace, espadrilles and a straw tote for a Mediterranean inspired look when going to the farmers market

Blue and white Carhartt gingham shirt with full leather skirt, GNW cardigan thrown over the shoulders to add style, studded flats, silk scarf, and sunflower yellow Longchamp Pilage cuire bag (all own)

Black and White

This (non) color combination always looks elegant and sophisticated and never goes out of style. It is worth to invest in. Getting a black and white super-size gingham shirt dress covers two trends in one (photo on the left above). See here for other black-and-white inspirations.

Two-tone mixed media dress with cup sleeves (eShakti). The skirt adds interest and enhances the vertical line for a tall, slim look

Black and white Chanel type jacket with full leather skirt, collier de chien belt, structured bag, white Mary Janes for a still chilly spring day (all own)

Spring trend: Blue and White

The navy colors scream vacation, but are also crisp for the office. Definitively a trend to adopt. When you style this trend with separates it is no risk at all (see photos below on the right). The same applies when you buy a high quality sailor top. I like the shirtdress (on the left, upper column) because it is such a classic cut with a twist. The vertical pleats and lines give the illusion of being tall and slim. Well, of course I also love sheaths and cup sleeves. The dress on the left, panel on the bottom)  is great for the office. Add a statement necklace, a blue or white cardigan or blazer and open toe pumps in white, navy or nude and you are done.

Blue and white contrast trim pleat front poplin shirtdress (eShakti). The fitted cut makes this dress great for going from work to play by just switching the shoes

Spring trend: All white

If you tan easily or have a dark skin color this trend is a must-have. However, everyone with China white skin or an olive undertone like me looks washed out in this trend and has to wait until summer. White on white is so versatile from romantic, over cool crisp urban to sophisticated elegance. Throw some pearls on and marsala pumps and you have a great work outfit with the left dress below. Scuba blue strappy sandals and a straw hat make you ready for the garden party. I really like the bubble look tunic on the right. It would be a great beach cover-up or nice with white jeans for the weekend or white pants and a long gold necklace with big pendant for work.

White Morgan dress (eShakti). I like the cut-outs over the cleavage. It protects a bit from the sun and gives the illusion of more coverage and allows to wear the dress also on the dog days in summer

Too bad that spring is still at least two months away here in Alaska and only lasts 3-4 weeks 😦 . What are your favorite spring trends? Which trends will you adopt?
