Why Is Plaid in Extreme Colors like Pink or Turquoise Risky?

Every shade of pure red, or bluish red is something I can’t resist. When I saw this pink plaid skirt I had to have it. It’s Burberry and pink, you know! Who can resist a Burberry plaid skirt in one’s size in one of the favorite colors at a bargain? Not me, sorry.

Tip: When wearing pink, make sure it doesn’t look girly.

Well, plaid is easily categorized as Punk Style and pink easily falls in the category of girly or Romantic Style. Therefore, this combination reads “risky”. In other words, one has to be careful how to style it when one wants to go for an office-appropriate business casual summer look. I was well aware of that, but I had some ideas how to look sophisticated in plaid.

Stay with the Colors of the Plaid and/or Neutrals

I love to pair pink with brown, white, taupe, or black. For the work outfit example below, I picked the black-taupe theme and combined the black-white-pink plaid with my Burberry Brit trench coat, a black silk blouse, black patent leather wedges and a white jade and black onyx necklace for an office appropriate look. You can find a review of the necklace at the link. I added a white black striped cardigan as the AC can be pretty chilly and the cardigan nicely picks up the colors of the skirt, necklace, and shirt. The perfect accessory for this look so to speak.

Tip: Never wear a brand or designer head-to-toe. Limit yourself to two pieces at most.

Polka Dot and Plaid Can Look Great Together

When the pattern is large and your have a polka dot top in colors of the tartan, give the mix a try. The mix can look incredibly stylish as the photos below prove.

Mixing Plaid with Leaf Print

The next example again bases on the black-white pink color scheme. This time a leave print top is paired with the A-line skirt. You could also go for a zebra print or a snow leopard print top. See the post at the link for a guide on how to mix prints and patterns.

Try Adding a Pop of Color

My late Mom always said that yellow looks great with my black hair. For starters, I am a brunette. But I 100% agree that black and yellow make a stark contrast and color statement. Pink and black look also great together. But just for them alone, it would scream 1980s. Yellow and white together are an eternal summer classic. Therefore, why not adding a yellow pop of color when
wearing pink.
