See these beautiful paper and metal gowns

Art in Alaska paper dress from maps

First Friday is a big thing in Fairbanks. I am not really into it and have to admit I only go when I have a reason like the local artist is my friend or the institute where I work is hosting it. Well, the last one I attended was organized by the institute at which I work. The artist was Mary Matthews and I have to admit it was worth going. She presented gorgeously flowing and drape dresses that any fashionista would consider a “must have!”

Despite I loved all her gowns, I did not buy any one of them! Can you imagine that? Unfortunately for us, they are made of maps and satellite images. I liked the ones made from geological maps and satellite images the most as they had the strong red and brown or blue and green shades. One dress also was made from metal. Any middle age knight armor I have seen so far in my life looked like a wall flower in comparison. I was so happy when she allowed me to take pictures to share with my readers on my blog. Here are the dresses I liked the most.

You can find more of Mary Matthews work her exhibition webpage.

Is there a First Friday culture where you live? What do you think about these gowns? Which one is your favorite? Let me know by email, I am curious.
